WHY THE KYIV BRIDGE STRIKES AND MOLDOVA DRONES MATTER
Russian forces have struck Kyiv's Southern and Northern bridges six times since October 1, according to the October 3 Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, aiming to split the city and disrupt civilian transportation. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned foreign citizens to leave Kyiv, stating strikes would continue.
ISW assesses the strikes are part of a wider campaign to degrade Ukraine's economy and pressure the government toward capitulation during the winter heating season. The Russian statement signals intent to keep targeting critical infrastructure in major cities through winter 2026-2027.
Separately, five Russian drones and loitering munitions crashed in Moldova on October 3, exceeding the count in any prior incursion, Moldovan President Maia Sandu reported. ISW assesses increasingly intense drone incursions into Moldovan and NATO airspace likely aim to normalize such violations over time.
Ukraine continued its own long-range campaign, striking an Iskander launch system in Bryansk Oblast and a drone launch complex in Oryol Oblast, President Zelensky and Ukraine's Strategic Communications Center reported. Russia launched 157 drones overnight, continuing high-volume strike pressure on Ukrainian cities.
